Cardogan Teapot

Rare ‘Vexierkanne’ in the shape of a peach after a Chinese model, 14 cm high, underglaze blue swords mark, Meissen 1730

Description

The name originates from English collectors (Honey Dictionaire of Ceramic Art p. 103): the Honorable Miss Cardogan, who presented a Chinese original to the famous collector Lady Rockingham – since then the pot has been bearing its name.

Meissen examples are rare, we know of only 8 others: e.g. porcelain collection in the Zwinger (Walcha T. 30); John Paul Getty Museum; Smithonian Museum, Washington, D. C.; Metropolitan Museum New York (Gift of Thornton Wilson); Pauls-Eisenbeiss (p. 440, with a photo of a Chinese original).

Kangxi originals: Porzellansammlung Zwinger, Dresden (Inv.-Nr. PO 6581–6584;), The Jie Rui Tang Coll. (Sotheby’s New York 20.03.2018 Nr. 355)
