Snuff box in the form of a folded letter

Dimensions: 8.8 x 5.7 x 3.0 cm; form no. 89, no mark; copper-gilt-mount

Flat snuff box in the form of a folded letter, decorated with an iron-red seal with the portrait of a young girl and the inscription ‘Devinés au juste et ouvrés’.

There are only three comparative boxes known to date: 

• Private collection, Zurich (Beaucamp-Markowsky no. 119) with the inscription ‘a la plus fidèle partout ou Elle s’est trouve’
• Metropolitan Museum New York, inscription ‘a Messieurs les Amateurs de tabac genre d’Espagne’ (quoted after Beaucamp-Markowsky ibid.)
• Coll. Blohm III (Sotheby’s 09.10.1961 No 561), inscription ‘A Mademoiselle: Mademoiselle deV.E.P. couv:AD.S’
